"Give
me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."
In 1986, we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of The Statue of Liberty.
The United States Mint, by an Act of Congress, authorized the minting of three
different coins celebrating this great event. Part of the original purchase price of
each coin was used to restore the Statue and Ellis Island, and to create an endowment for
the future maintenance of these national monuments. All of these coins enjoy legal
tender status. This is the first copper-nickel clad half dollar commemorative coin
issued. This is the
first time since 1929 that the United States has issued a $5.00 gold coin!
