The George
Washington Silver Commemorative Half Dollar was issued in recognition of the 250th
anniversary of the birth of Washington. It was authorized by an Act of Congress
passed on December 23, 1981 and signed into law by the President (Public Law 97-104).
Produced by the U.S. Mint, these half dollars are legal tender. This is the first U.S. 90% silver coin to be minted since 1964
and the first commemorative coin to be issued by the U.S. since 1954.
